At their engagement session when Mary and Sam told Steven and I about their art deco wedding Steven was nearly salivating. I’ve mentioned before that he loves art deco. His favorite artist is Klimt. He loves Gatsby, 1920’s fashion, the music, the era. I mean, the guy wears a vest, bowtie, hat and pocket watch every single day so its no wonder he’s drawn to anything with style.
Steven was devastated when learned he had to give a keynote address on the weekend of Mary and Sam’s wedding. Luckily the wonderful Ashley Corry stepped in to photograph their day with me. Ashley was wonderful and I’m so glad we’ve had the pleasure of working with her this summer.
From the moment I walked in a laid my eyes on Mary’s gorgeous beaded gown I was in Photographer Heaven. It’s a show stopper without being too flashy. It’s classic and contemporary all at once. Its sexy without being revealing. She nailed it. I just love the way it photographs. She even had a special hanger made that paired perfectly with her dress and overall style. The mixed blush tones of her bridesmaids’ dresses brought out their rosy skin tones and I loved the blue pop of color from their textured paper-like bouquets that tied into they guy’s suits.
This was my first time shooting at Nouveau Antique Art Bar and I wasn’t disappointed. Most photographers might shy away from such a venue because it has very little natural light, or light period, but I loved the effect of the Tiffany Lamps hanging from the ceiling and because the walls and ceilings were black they really stood out. And it’s nothing that a little flash photography can’t handle 😊 I can see why Sam and Mary picked this venue.
Working with Mary again was a treat because she’s so incredible in front of the camera and is so easy going. Normally it takes people a few minutes to warm up in front of the camera, but Mary just naturally looks she’s in a magazine. She has the face of an angel and she knows how to use it. Her eyes pierce you. Portraits were done in a matter of minutes because Mary is such a natural while Sam never stops smiling his authentic, childlike smile. I absolutely love his giggle. I’d call it a laugh, which is probably the correct term (and maybe manlier) but its sweeter than a laugh and its far more infectious.
I mentioned that Mary was laid back, right? Even though it was the middle of June in downtown Houston and Mary was wearing a heavy gown with long sleeves, she never once complained about stepping outside at golden hour for a few last portraits of the two of them. These turned out to be my favorites.
They are such a beautiful couple. You can see why we put them on our home page!
